The word "woman" in Holy Scripture evokes many references to Mary.<br> She is the woman in Genesis through whom the head of the serpent will be crushed (Gen 3:15). <br>She is the woman in Revelation clothed with the sun and a crown of twelve stars (Rev 12:1). <br>Mary bookends the bible, appearing in both the first and the last books.<br><br>
She punctuates the scriptures, appearing in the Gospel of John at the wedding feast in Cana. <br>When the wine ran short, Mary interceded by telling Jesus, “They have no wine” (John 2:3). <br> Jesus responded by calling her "woman" and told her, “My hour has not yet come.” <br> The word woman is not a rebuke — it’s a term of respect. <br>Jesus respects His mother. <br>Mary responds to that respecting by saying, “Do whatever He tells you,” assured that He will provide for their needs. <br>Jesus performs His first public miracle at Cana, because He is a good Jewish man, who respects His mother.<br><br>
Jesus’ hour does come at His crucifixion. <br> As He hangs on the cross, Jesus again shows His love and respect for His mother by giving her to John. <br>He assures that she will not be left alone by saying, “Woman behold your son.” <br>Through John, Jesus gave his mother to us from the cross when he said, “Behold your mother.”<br><br>
Mary is our spiritual mother. <br>Unlike Eve, the first mother of the living, she is obedient, always pointing us to Jesus and telling us, “Do whatever He tells you.”<br> Mary is the new Eve — she is the woman clothed with the sun. <br>She is the mother who is always there for us — to intercede for our needs. <br>Her role in God’s saving plan is not over.
